I thought I’d share a great quote with you.
But first a little context … the quote comes from the book Vintage Jesus by Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears and is found in chapter 7, “Did Jesus Rise from Death?”
The resurrection of Jesus is the most known and celebrated miracle in the history of the world. There has always been consensus that it is in many ways the core issue of our Christian faith … we are told [in 1 Corinthians 15] that if Jesus did not bodily rise in victory over death, then Christianity is nothing more than a cruel hoax dreamt up by liars to give false hope to gullible fools. (p.130/131)
The chapter then goes on to explore the biblical evidence, circumstantial evidence, and the non-Christian historical evidence which are used to establish the resurrection as historical fact.
Finally, I get to the quote that prompted this posting! Under point 6 of the biblical evidence (Jesus’ resurrection was recorded as Scripture shortly after it occurred) we find:
In fact, John Rodgers, former dean of of the Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry, says, “This is the sort of data that historians of antiquity drool over.” (p.133)
It was that bolded part that really made me smile when reading this chapter … I thought it was a great way to sum up the evidence we have that Jesus did in fact rise from death.
